I am the 'Alpine Settler'

Born
in 1941, I grew up  in West Sussex on the south coast of England.

I moved to Italy to marry in 1965, and returned to England in 1974 for family reasons.

The dream from that moment was to return and retire in the Valtellina near Lake Como in the 'Heart of the Alps'.

Well that is just what I did, buying a small ruined farmhouse and having it rebuilt. Oh and between buying and restoring my new home I thought I'd have a heart attack too - just to spice life up a bit!

And that's how I became the 'Alpine Settler' that I am today!

On these pages you will find the story of how I happened to finally become the Alpine Settler that I am today. That really began when I met my dear Bruno
on my birthday way back in 1963.

Then you will be able to follow my long journey in time researching the whereabouts of my long lost maternal Grandmother Muriel a.k.a. "Nina"! Over the various 'episodes' you will see how genealogical research can
literally change 'who you are'  from day to day. How there are often unsuspected surprises in each generation of a family's past. The surprises, sadness and happiness I discovered will be revealedr as you follow the "Edmed Saga" on the following pages. Everything from a grandmother born in Cairo, Egypt to a great grandfather who became a 'boy soldier' at the age of 13 and his (future) wife who was Canadian... Then to two uncles (unknown to me until now) who died, both aged 20,  in World War 2. One who drowned when his ship was torpedoed by a U-Boat, and the other who died in Normandy just one day after the D-Day landings.

All of this will, eventually be followed by some pretty long family trees when they are in a fit state to be added. I've yet to start on my paternal family tree - and that will be daunting as my Dad was one of seventeen children - thirteen of which survived... That must, of course then be followed by my Italian family tree from my husband's family!

Oh - better think about a photo album too I guess.

But I somehow think that this will all be a "Work in Progress" for a long time to come!
